Confidence is Key

Confidence is the foundation upon which all of our success is built. It can also be the number one challenge that keeps us from fulfilling our dreams. It is at once our greatest ally and our fiercest competitor.

The good news is that your confidence, like any other skill, can be grown and developed. Better yet, it is not a complicated process to follow. So get out a piece of paper (or your favorite note-taking app on your smartphone) and let’s learn how to grow your confidence so we can grow your business.

Defining Your Strengths
Too often, we get caught up in our weaknesses, and this leads to a lack of confidence. We feel uneasy about performing certain tasks like prospecting, and it takes our focus away from what we do best.

Rather than focusing on weaknesses to start, let’s get those confidence juices flowing by making a list of your strengths. Maybe you are a passionate presenter, or you are meticulous at following up with your team. By identifying what you do well, you can feel confident knowing that you have that part of your business under control.

So make a quick list of 3 to 5 personal strengths that you can rely on when you absolutely need to.

Be Honest About Your Weaknesses
We all have weaknesses. It’s a fact of life. Having a weakness is not a bad thing at all because it shows where we can focus our improvement efforts. A weakness is not a permanent struggle. It is simply the next opportunity to get better.

In order to maximize that opportunity, we need to be honest with ourselves about the areas that we struggle in. If you struggle with inviting people to look at your products then simply recognize that this is an area that you need to work on. Get past the fear of failure and realize that fear is simply the guide that gets you to the next milestone in the growth of your business.

Go ahead and list 3 to 5 areas for improvement. Be sure to be honest with yourself.

Match Your Strengths to Your Weaknesses
Now comes the fun part. Look at your list of weaknesses. For each one, pick one or more of your strengths that you can use to make improvements on it.

For example, if you struggle with prospecting but are meticulous at following up then use that strength to follow up on your own prospecting efforts. Likewise, if you are a passionate presenter, then redirect that passion to your efforts of inviting people to see your products.

Refining the Process
Now that you have a feel for the process of applying strengths to your weaknesses, let’s look at some specific ways to apply this to your business.

Take a look at the categories below and rate it as a strength or weakness.

  • Prospecting
  • Inviting
  • Presenting
  • Follow-up
  • Closing
  • Promoting events

If you find that you have strengths in all of these areas then fantastic. You are well on your way to building your business.

However, if you are like most of us, there are a couple of areas where you could use some improvement. This is where your list of strengths comes in handy.

For each weak area above, take one or more of your strengths and apply it. Using your strengths will give you the confidence to improve each area and as a result, your overall confidence will grow.

This tiny shift in perception may be all that you need in order to jump-start your business and propel it to new heights.
