From the Home Team—Social Media Basics
Last week, we discussed why your business should be using social media, and today, we are going to take that conversation a step further by covering some of the basics you need to know about each of the most popular social media platforms and the algorithms that run them.
The Most Popular Social Media Platforms
The short answer to this question is that over half of the world uses social media for an average of 2.5 hours each day!
Facebook: As one of the most widely used platforms, Facebook caters to a diverse audience. It’s an excellent space for building a community around your brand, leveraging groups for engagement, and utilizing targeted advertising to reach your ideal customer.
Instagram: Owned by Facebook, Instagram is known for its visual appeal. It’s ideal for showcasing products through high-quality images and videos. Features like Instagram Stories and Reels offer interactive ways to connect with your audience and convey your brand’s story.
X (formerly Twitter): Most people still call this platform by its former name, Twitter, but it’s important to know that the platform has recently gone through a rebranding. That being said, X is a fast-paced community designed to share real-time updates with your audience. This makes it a valuable platform for quick updates, industry trends, and engaging in conversations. X allows users to use hashtags to increase discoverability and participate in relevant discussions within the network marketing community.
TikTok: The most recent addition to this list, TikTok is a platform that has become synonymous with short-form videos, providing a dynamic space for creative expression. Network marketers can leverage TikTok to showcase products in an entertaining way, participate in entertaining challenges, and tap into a younger audience.
LinkedIn: For a more professional approach, LinkedIn stands out as the go-to platform. It’s an effective space for professional networking, establishing industry authority, and connecting with like-minded professionals in the direct selling space.
Understanding Algorithms
Before we dive further into ways you can use these platforms to help grow your business, there is one more thing you need to understand—the social media algorithms. By definition, algorithms are a set of rules, signals, and data that govern the way a platform operates. Algorithms can get pretty complicated, so we aren’t going to get into nitty-gritty about how they work. However, there are a few important things you need to understand about social media algorithms. The first is that they are used to determine how many people see the content you post, and the way they determine that is three-fold:
1) Engagement Metrics: Platforms prioritize showing content with higher engagement, including likes, comments, and shares.
2) Consistent Posting: Regular and consistent posting tells the algorithm that you are actively involved in your account, which can signal it to improve the reach of your content.
3) Video Content: Many algorithms today favor video content which makes it a powerful tool to help enhance your account’s visibility.
Whew! That was a lot to cover. If you have any questions about any of the basics we’ve covered today, head over to our Facebook Leader’s group and ask them there so we can make sure you get some answers.
In the meantime, start thinking about what platform(s) you may want to start using for your business, and check back next week to learn more about some of the best practices you should be following when it comes to social media marketing.
